ONLY $44,000 MORE (this year anyway)

Leave it to the HDN Our View Opinion, anonymous author by the way, to think the Havre taxpayers ought to just buck up and pass the mill levy for another $44,000 plus because “it’s for the kids”. It appears that next year’s school budget is going to fall short if voters can’t find it in their hearts to put aside their anguish over the Mahon debacle and reach deep for one more bet on the superintendents crap table.

The school currently has a combined budget of around 13 million dollars and if they aren’t able to figure out how to cut a mere $44,000 out of next year’s budget, they need new management. That brings to mind the question. Is there not one soul in Havre that is willing to run for school board to put an end to this madness? The filing deadline is drawing near.
Show some respect for yourselves and the taxpayers footing the bill for this government tax sucking bureaucracy run amuck.
VOTE NO TO THE MILL LEVY UNTIL WE GET $200,000 WORTH OF ANSWERS!

  1. I agree wholeheartedly. If we pass this mill levy after what has gone on we are dumb backwoods hillbilly schmucks

  2. Let the school board members personally make up the short fall themselves. After all they were the ones who made the asinine decision to give all that money to Mr. Mahon. Maybe they won't be so quick to give away the tax payers money next time.

  3. Personally I think the mill levy will pass as I just heard the voting will take place at the high school instead of a mail in ballot.
It will all fall into place as it has in years past. The first thing the school hotshots will do right before election day is get every single school employee together for a meeting to talk about the mill levy and tell them to vote yes. Somewhere in the course of the meeting the administration will point a finger out to the group and proclaim “If this mill levy fails, a couple of you will have to be laid off, we have no other alternative” and give them the spiel “it’s all about the kids”. The scared little school rabbits, fearful for their very jobs will then rush to vote yes to save their own jobs and because the election is held in the school there will be a low turnout of the disgusted NO voters. This scenario goes on year after year. What we should be bellyaching about is the fact that there is no mail ballot this time.
I am calling everyone I know that may be interested in filing for school board to offer my help and encouragement. The rest of you should do the same.

  4. Arizona school district sues taxpayers to stop questions

A handful of taxpayers in a small community north of Wickenburg, Arizona are being targeted by the local school district in a lawsuit that asks a judge to declare they have no right to request public records, sue the district, or complain to outside agencies.

The Congress Elementary School District claims that past efforts by these residents to obtain documents such as minutes of board meetings and spending reports amount to harassment that should not have to be tolerated.

Jean WarrenBut Jean Warren, one of the four defendants named in the lawsuit filed January 28, 2010, said the complaint is an illegal attempt to silence citizens who have questioned the district’s policies and spending practices.

“The whole thing is based on trying to shut us down so that nobody has any rights,” Warren said. “Just because you live in a small area does not mean you don’t have rights. Everything I believe about the Constitution and what it means to be a citizen of the USA is being shot down

  5. It is about the kids my foot. Why do we continue to listen to these ridiculous demands from a board of "trustees" who cannot be trusted with the people's money. Huston and Couch made the deal with Mahon and the board rubber stamped it and sealed their fate on this issue.

The people of Great Falls voted NO to the mill levy there in 2008 and the school didn't implode or fail. In fact the district didn't even request a mill levy increase in 2009. Of course now they want a cool $900K! I hope the voters there take a stand again too. It is time we begin to learn to live within our means.

I realize $44k isn't a whole lot of money when you put into perspective with their entire budget but its less than half of Mahon's 1 year payment. So for me if they can afford to squander that money they can figure out a way to save the $44,000 in the budget and I don't want to know how, it would be a secret anyway!!

Listen up current School Board you better find the $44K and you better not take it out of student instruction or building maintenance budgets! I don't care if you have to pass the hat amongst yourselves, figure it out!

I also ask where's the outrage from the folks? Not one person has yet to challenge a sitting board member? Are we not yet ashamed of our lazy, apathetic feelings toward public service? There must be someone out there flipping burgers or selling socks at K-Mart who has the time and inclination to run for School Board? I would except my job takes me out of town a couple times a week on the train and I'm an #@%^&%^ according to some so I would probably lose! There must be someone out there who can listen to the folks and make a tough call? Anybody? Please we need you!

  6. I did not know that the voting would be at the school. I thought we would get a mail ballot. Thanks for the heads up. I will make sure I go vote so my "NO" vote is counted. I wonder if they could find some money in the fund that takes kids out of town for sports. I know this will anger some people, but at least they aren't taking money out of the education funds or laying off teachers. At any rate...my vote is NO.

  7. Crap NEO-CON, don't give our board any ideas!!!!!

  8. You "NO" what really upsets me, is it will probably cost more to hold this election than the $44,000 levy!!!!!! I can't believe the board has the "B-lls" to even think of asking for a levy this time around.
And it is totally outrageous for anyone to use the "Vote yes for the Kids" excuse. I think everyone will agree that anyone with any kind of management ability would be able to save $44,000(less than 0.4%) of a $13 million budget.
MY GOD,WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE111111111111111

  9. When is the filing deadline?
I do know someone who is ready to file. I will wait until I am old and wise then run, it is probably a thankless job.

I think that we have spoiled our kids. They have so many opportunities in school that we did not have. It is one thing to go to all these sporting events but why does the school have to take them to the Olive Garden and the Red Lobster to eat? Whatever happened to eating in a reasonable family restraunt or packing a lunch? It is pretty easy to just spend an extra night in motels rather than drive a little later.
    ]
My point is I could trim $44,000 in a blink of the eye and be equal and fair to all the kids. JUST SAY NO NO NO..
NO TAX PAYER PAID LUNCHES AT SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS.
NO TO THE LEVY AND A NO VOTE TO CURRENT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.

  10. LOOOOVE IT! I wonder what is the cost to hold a mill levy election? I bet it is at least 1/2 of the 44 Thousand $$$ plus all the time spent campaigning for it when they should really be 'for the students'.

  11. The school district also spends our tax money for travel to Helena during the legislative session as well make a payment with tax dollars to lobby the legislature for more tax dollars

I think the last day to file is the 25th but you do have to have some signatures to file. They have the filing information at the Robins school building
