I just read the article in tonight’s paper regarding Councilman Vies accosting Timmie Leeds, reporter for the local Havre Daily “News”. Apparently I missed one hell of a council meeting Monday night. Between Dennis Morgan coming before the council to chastise them yet again for their stupidity regarding annexation and Vies chewing out the HDN reporter, I have been told it reminded one of the old Laurel and Hardy show.
What Councilman Vies obviously doesn’t understand is that the Havre Daily Corrector Blog was started to CORRECT the misstatements and untruths continually covered in Havre’s half-assed, so called newspaper, not to mention their slanted perspective on politics, environmental topics, and socialist agendas to name a few. It is true, those of us at the Corrector have sent e-mails to various officials, councilmen, board members, etc trying to get the behind the scenes facts that the readers of the HDN never hear about. It didn’t take long after trying to get involved in local affairs I learned the sad fact that many of the local government boards, councils, etc meet, discuss, and decide on topics of interest behind the scenes and out of public scrutiny even though there are open meeting laws being violated. Like all laws, where there is a will, there is a way, and so it holds true for behind the scenes meetings.
Those of us involved with the Corrector were pleased to see that at least Vies thought we report factual information. And he should know, after all, he wasn’t born yesterday. Factual information is our objective. The difference between the blog and the paper is that we admit we report from the angle that reflects from our own opinions of the fact, while the “real newspaper” reports the same way, yet denies any bias. Realizing that rarely can you count on the Havre Daily “News” to contain many factual statements some of us decided to branch out on our own blogging venture to try and remedy that problem. I hope you agree that this blog can develop into something that can be good for the citizens of Havre and unlike the HDN, all of our tripe is free.

ReplyDeleteI'm a little surprised that Councilman Vies' opinion about how the HDN should report is not getting any notice. Unless I read the article wrong, or it was miss reported by the HDN, Councilman Vies said that he thinks the HDN should only report positive community news.
ReplyDeleteWhile I too like to hear all the positive things going on in our community, I also want a free press to be able to report all the facts, be they good or bad.
While we all question the quality of our local paper's content from time to time, I question more so a public official that does not believe in one of the most fundamental principles and the very foundation that our our free democracy was built upon.

ReplyDeleteThis will be my only comment for this blog. I would like to clarify what I said at the council meeting on Monday night. I stated that I received an e-mail from the Havre Daily News about the council meeting on December 7th, which I was not in attendance. I was wrong with this statement as the e-mail was from this blog. I stated to Tim Leeds that I have nothing against him, but that I do have a problem with negative media that is used to sell their papers or agenda. I stated that I do not like MSNBC, FOX, or any other station that promote negative slants towards the opinions they do not agree with to sell they product. I feel the same way about this blog and the negative approach they take in it. I think to remain anonymous and to use a handle to hide your identity is ridiculous. Individuals that take this approach are the first individual to leave the kitchen when it gets to hot. If for some odd reason someone needs to response to me you can either call me at 262-3915 or stop by 201 2nd Street and I would be more than willing to listen. Have a wonderful Holiday Season. Veis
ReplyDeleteJerry Veis or is it Just Jerry, or is it just Veis, who the hell cares. You are a loud mouth bullie that needs attention every 24 minutes or you sink into unhappyness. YOu use your size and your loud voice to intimidate all those around you. You also think every word out of your mouth is gospel. There are some out here that know different. It really is to bad the gal that ran aginst you lost and not because of here party affiliation, but because she could of and would of done better things for this city and its people in the first month that you have done in four years.
