Hill County Declared a disaster area

Is there such a thing as too much rain? Apparently so according to the folks that live out at Rocky Boy. Extensive flooding has damaged roads, water lines and even has put the brand new Clinic is jeopardy by undermining the foundation of the building. Our governor was quick to get the FEMA boys out to assess the damage in order to allow the tribe to receive FEMA funds for rebuilding. What is not mentioned is the status of any aid for those that live off the reservation but all of Hill County has been declared a disaster area by President Obama.

We have been reading news reports placing the water damage between 6 to 10 million dollars.

  1. Yea i seen a big FEMA truck gassing up the other day. Not a bad response time i dont think for something that i dont really think is much of a "disaster". Too bad they dont respond so quickly when they really need to.

  2. I just hope the money doesn't just sit in the elders or councilmens pockets and actually goes where it should to help the people.

  5. You are so on it Willy! Thank you for being the first to say it.

Nobody best say anything negative about Rocky Boy getting these FEMA funds or you will be branded as a racist. Also nobody better say anything about the wisdom of spending 10 million dollars building a clinic in a flood plain on unstable ground either or you are just a blatant racist.

At least all money granted to Rocky Boy will be spent in Hill County. Yeah Obama!

  7. To havre hillbilly you are right about that clinic,I know the custodian out there and he told me a month after it was built it was taking on water, do to the runoff and underwater springs.I hope they have outside people in charge of the reconstruction or nothing will get done.To willy I will tell you one thing, this flooding didn't happen over night but they're to lazy to fill one sandbag.

  8. Obama HAD to approve this money, after all the promises he made our native people during his campaign, I know of nothing he's done to help them before this. The clinic may have been a mistake, but the roads, highway, homes and water systerm were no one's fault but mother nature. I think you all would hope for some help if it were you or your family without water or better yet, homeless.

  9. I'd like to know if these are fema funds does the tribe still get to give native prefferance to the contractors when bidding for this reconsrtuction. Seems like a double standard when they can tell people they are not equill and can not work on the res but don't you dare tell this to them if they want to work off the res.

  10. If "ALL" of Hill County has been declared a disaster, will the park be given money for repairs? And what about the farmers that lost hay and crop due to the flooding?

  11. To 69 corvette i agree that they need help out there, what scares me is that they will give the money to the tribe,so only their cousins will benefit.Tony Belcourt who owns his own construction company will totally inflate his bill,as he is known for,On the other hand maybe they will surprise me.I do know that their snow removal far exeeds the city of Havres.I wonder if Max erickson will get money for his golf course because he should.

  12. I cant even begin to imagine the lost revenue for local farmers and that nice Golf course. I dont really think there is all that much damage in the park really. Mostly harmless erosion from what i can tell. Im out there on a regular basis. If any of the money goes to said farmers and golf course (amongst others) im sure it will not be sufficient. The tribe will get nearly all of the money. They will not repair the problems the right way. They will not learn from the mistakes they made in their building processes. That clinic was in danger already. Built in the wrong place and they now get money for being stupid. Dont even call me a racist because i would say the same thing if the people living out there were pink or purple. I just hope Everyone gets the money that they deserve.

  13. Don't worry fedup cause their all cuzzins "out there" so dande's concern that they will act like "white local politicians" is also unfounded. Shawn isn't racist cause he would say the same thing about all "non-whites". Yep,you guys are a kick.

  14. my concern is not unfounded, as I have spoken to people who live at Rocky Boy and in town who are Native American, and they are concerned about the distribution of money.

There is a concern that it will be kept in the pockets of councilmen and the elders and the people who need it won't receive it.

And from what I read, this money had to be specifically requested for the Reservation as they are a sovereign nation and cannot receive state funds.
