Is waving an American Flag in America on Cinco de Mayo Day Racist?

Cinco de Mayo which is celebrated on May 5th is not Mexico’s Independence Day, which is September 16, but rather celebration of a Mexico army in 1862 stopping a French invasion of Mexico through the town of Puebla. A rag-tag army of 4,500 poorly equipped Mexicans stopped a French army that was very well equipped and numbered around 6,500 soldiers. People living around the region of Puebla have celebrated this holiday for years however it is not widely celebrated throughout the rest of the country. In recent years the celebration has been heavily observed along the United States and Mexican border. You can read the history of this historic battle here; http://www.mexonline.com/cinco-de-mayo.htm

Yesterday 5 students at the Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill California were sent home by the school administration when they refused to turn their T-shirts that depicted the American Flag inside out so as not to offend the students of Mexican heritage.  A similiar instance also made the headlines in Denver Colorado.

So now even wearing a T-shirt depicting your patriotism is racist? Yep, Arizona is on the right track.  Time to take back our country

  1. It is shocking to me the stories you pick and choose to publish on this blog. With all of the garbage going on in the world...this is your "issue" for the day?? LOL
Not one story on the oil mess in the gulf.
Not one story on the attempted terror attack in NYC.
Not one story on financial reform.
Ohhhhh but quite the diatribe on the City Council meeting meeting weeks ago and such a lovely personal attack on Mr. Veis from all 10 of your bloggers. Its my understanding that the person alleged for handling this blog...I will call him Mr. L...has had some personal dealing with Ger...ummmmm...interesting!!

  2. It's as about as racist as waving an American flag in Butte on ST.Paddys day.You may even have one of those crazy irishmen buy you a big mug of green beer.

  3. Im not real sure that this is a big deal. Wearing a shirt with a flag on it. Seems like freedom of speach covers this issue. Anyone should be able to wear whatever they wish with whatever message they want on it. As far as schools go as long as it doesnt pertain to sex, drugs, or profanity it should not be a problem.

  4. Red, all those stories you mention have been on your beloved liberal CNN all day every day since they happened. We are trying for some topics that are not making the news.

You may have noticed that NO newspaper covered the Vies outburst at city hall. You guys are more interested in guessing who is behind the blog than having a civil discourse but you are ok with making personal attacks and alleging facts yourself. To quote our beloved Bill; You are a kick

  5. NO, it is not racist to wave an American flag in America on Cinco de Mayo.
It is not just 'widely celebrated' along the mexican border, it is widely celebrated in many states, some of them with spanish names like 'colorado' for instance. Another spanish named state, 'montana' though does not celebrate this holiday as much, although that trend is growing.

I always wondered what the Native Americans think when someone says something like 'take our country back' it reminds of the t-shirts they wear: "fighting terrorism since 1492" The original tea party dressed up like them.

These Native Americans will of course be caught up in the dragnet by the arizona gestapo "ve vill need to see your papers please" simply because they have the same color of skin.

but you don't care do you?

  6. The white man invaded the Indians but they made the mistake of not making them work, now all's we have is a racist group of indians that leech off the government.

  7. HDC or Mr. L...I thought you were touting this blog as an alternative to the HDN? I am no fan of the HDN but even their crappy paper has more intellectual stories than this blog. It seems like your goal isto spread right wing BS to your small readership....your blog, your rules, I am just calling it out. This story in particular...it is quite obvious that these boys were trying to make a statement on Cinco de Mayo at their school. The school is 40% mexican and Cinco de Mayo was a big deal for the school. Did these boys wear these clothes regularly...I don't know, but it didn't seem like it. It would of been no different than all of the Mexican students wearing some sort of ethnic Mexican outfits ONLY on the 4th of July...it was the statement they were trying to make. Should they have been sent home, No..I don't think so. They wanted to make a point and they did. Your headline shows how you right wingnuts interpret this crap. Like ohhhh these poor American boys...all they were doing was displaying their patriotism and these whiny illegals try and make a big deal of it. It just gets old...I'm not sure why I bother, other than I hope my rebuttals are as irritating to you as your posts are to me. Fed up...you are racist..Period. Yes some NAmericans leech off the gov...but more white Americans are doing that than NAmericans. The point is they are all Americans...for heavens sake they are all HUMAN BEINGS. And wtf is up with your comment about we didn't make them work? So we took their land and your pissed we didn't make them work. Your an a$$!
Of course people want to know who is running this blog. I goes to your motivation and personal reasons for why you post the stuff you do. You made it available to the WWWeb for all of us to register and share our opinion. If you are who I think, it just humors me that you have such a neg opinion of Gerry, when he was just doing his job in regards to you and I would also add that as a far right Republican, isn't fiscal conservatism your niche? I guess not when it comes to your own pocket book? I wouldn't normally indulge in gossip, but for you and this tabloid you have going I will make an exception.

  8. This story is all about the nonsense we digress to when a race card can be played. Who cares that a person of Mexican heritage celebrates Cinco De Mayo or that an American born patriotic student wears a flag t-shirt? Much is all much adieu about nothing.

The people that comment on this blog occasionally have an intelligent exchange but here lately it seems that every one is just interested in slapping at political parties or individuals around the community that have strong viewpoints. Even if you don’t know the facts throw something out there and blame someone. I may not agree with many of them at all times but at least they are doing something besides blogging stupid comments and making accusations. It is no wonder we never see many people actually run for these offices

  9. For one thing Red,indians from around our surrounding area are more racist than white people,I am not a racist i have 2 kids that are enrolled members of rocky boy and i love them more than anything.I would like to see you walk in jitterbugs tonight and have a couple drinks.I am predjudice against whites, indians, blacks etc.that don't work and leech off the government.I like every color of humans that work, even the whinos that i save my cans for, work for that 40 ouncer at the end of the day.And you are right i am an a$$.

  10. Frankly, Cinco de Mayo is another excuse for Americans (not Mexicans, Indians... whatever) to drink like fishes. If Americans want to wear an American shirt in America, big deal. Why do we celebrate these cultural days anyway? Where is the Norwiegan day/month or the burns too easily in the sun after 2 hours day/month. Equality dammit! Equality!

You know what, let's just celebrate Independence Day for everyone and leave it alone.

  11. This is ridiculous! They were wearing American flags. How about we kick everyone with a car parked on their lawn for over a week out of our country. Sinkthis has a point, there is no Caucasian American Day. Why the hell would we celebrate a Mexican war victory? If the kids were trying to ridicule the holiday by wearing those shirts then GOOD FOR THEM.

  12. Havrehasit. Yea, and noone wants it. wow. what an awfull thing to say. We celebrate wars we have won all the damn time. Those kids had a right to celebrate the holiday. just as the american kids had a right to wear the flag. You dont have to be racist about it. Havre has it. Ha! Yea, crabs so big they tend bar. Real nice person. Frickin nazi!

  13. American's can and are constitutionally protected to display the American flag Anywhere in America at any time! If anybody has a problem with that, then I suspect that they are either not American or they are not informed. If this was done by them down in Mexico, then there would be a definate reason for Questioning it! But it was here in the USA. If I did it and anybody had a problem with it I would tell them that I am Remembering every day what sacrifices were made by my forefathers who formed these liberties that we all are supposed to enjoy. So in other words, you enjoy your Freedom and Shut-up about mine!! and vice-versa. To quote Neo "NUFF SAID"

  14. Havre-Has-It? No one ever should Ridicule anyone who fought for Freedom! I don't care what your thoughts are on Immigration in this country, but take a look at what your words are saying? Freedom should at all times,by all free peoples, celebrated and understood that the freedom you enjoy are the Rights of all man-kind. no matter the country or flag involved! the Freedom is what is being celebrated not the politics of a country. please reconsider your position.

  15. Let me retract my previous statement as it was one of anger that American students can not wear American flags. As for racism, I do not care if the students wearing those American flags were black, white, or Mexican Americans. I do however believe America has become to liberal and sensitive to everyones needs. My immigrant forefathers swore their allegiance to the American flag and never looked back. No we are punishing kids that, maybe as a lark, are proudly sporting that flag rather than observing another country's holiday.

Tattoo: Your forfathers were not fighting for the right to observe a corrupts country's ideals and holidays. Let the Americans with Mexican forefathers celebrate the Quatro of July.

  16. Well Havre I don't blame an entire country of peoples that have a corrupt government. The problem with fighting and overcoming political corruption is Arms,in every country in the world that is in great turmoil because of corrupt power seeking people, the mass's have been dis-armed! Only left to fight with rocks, arrows, small explosives. When the power of the peoples to overcome evil grows, then the majority will always win!(example) If the greek people had guns then that situation would be resolved I believe, and then again in Spain,Ireland, etc.right now here in the usa we have a very corrupt government, the difference is that we are Armed so they need to move forward in incriments. We need to be Dis-armed first! which they are trying to do on several different levels! The Sacrifices of our forefathers that I mentioned are, when faced with overwhelming odds they had the courage to fight on because of the Power of Good and what is Just. they were not very well armed and had to play by thier wits. The same thing that the Mexicans did when the French invaded. I for one applaude Courage when used to seek Freedom and the inalienable Rights of all Humans to enjoy a peaceful and happy Life! I could go on forever, but I'll leave it at that.

  17. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day. It is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. We use it as an excuse to drink Corona and eat tacos.
