WHO READS THIS BLOG?

We at the Havre Daily Corrector were somewhat surprised by the results of our poll Should the City Police be able to pull people over for "reasons" such as "snow covered license plates" so they can check for further violations?

Forty percent of the people responding thought it was just hunky-dory that the police could pull them over for no real reason. Fifty-two percent responded that they should have some sort of reason. Make us wonder how many law enforcement people read our blog and respond to polls.

Thanks to all that participated

  1. Ever wonder why our city police are out stopping people for what seem like meaningless violations? Maybe they are good at what they do? Maybe they feel the need to earn their pay. Would you rather they sit at the office all day and collect a pay check? Or would you want them to get the drugs off our streets? Make us all feel safe at home? Make sure our children are safe at their schools? Make our town a better place to live so that businesses want to come and open up shop? People do not seem to want them around until it is too late. Unfortunately people of the community think that police should not have an opinion but yet are judged in everything they do. What a shame. The people who do not like the city police because they feel they are being judged, are the same ones who judge the officers themselves. Sounds like the pot is calling the kettle black? Simply food for thought.

  2. Wow it seems like forever since I last posted on the blog, great job by the way it looks like this site has really taken off. Kudos whoever you are, Havre needs folks like you who question the status quo.

I do wonder; however, why we keep worrying about what the cops are up to? I mean I get your point that the cops can't just stop you for nothing, but then again I guess I have to admit I was one of the people who voted for "they are sworn to protect us" choice because I want Havre to be safe. I don't drink and drive and I don't speed around town and I always wear my seatbelt, I carry insurance and have a valid drivers license and registration, so I guess I don't have anything to hide so if they pull me over I'm legal. I think these guys are just doing their jobs. I am sure the younger ones get a bit overzealous once in a while, but they do in every town.

Call me an idiot, but I think the cops need us to support them not question them all the time. Just like Homeland Security and our amazing military the bad guys only have to be right once and our cops have to be right 100% of the time or they are immediately blamed.

If you have nothing to hide and are legal, then you will just fine.

  3. OK, I get everyone’s point. I dislike any government agency, including the police, having unchecked power to do anything, including making unwarranted stops. I am for less government and less “big brother” activities and vote accordingly, not by party. Checks, balances, and individual freedoms should be in all that is made into law. This includes freedom from dictatorship or tactics that erode our freedoms such as registering firearms, getting stopped for no reason, etc. We the people are constantly losing our rights to be a free society by the constant chipping away little by little of our constitutional rights.

I have no problems with the police, the department, or Chief Nystrom. In fact, one of our bloggers with some inside knowledge is constantly telling me that the Havre Police Department is the best it has been this decade under Chief Nystrom’s management. The officers are adequately trained, they work together better than they have in years, and most are now happy with their job which was not the case a few years back.

With this being said, I will drop the subject. Thanks everyone for commenting on our blog

  4. Corrector, you are mistaken their are checks and balances in what cops do it is called the justice system (defense atty and judges). If the cops writes a bad ticket it gets thrown out in court and it the officer continues to exhibit this behavior he will be one run out of town or second not have a job. Just something to think about!!

  5. Tells it like it isJanuary 13, 2010 2:51 PM

Germany also had checks and balances (to begin with anyway) You got arrested for no reason and hauled into court where you could plea your case

We all know how that turned out and it started with the taking of the peoples right a little bit at a time
