HIGHWAY 2 PROJECT FOR HAVRE TO 10 MILES EAST

The Highway 2 Association has been working towards the construction of a 4-lane highway on Highway 2 since the turn of the decade. Sometime in the early 1960’s people like Norm Gorder, Dwayne Kretchmer, and other former Havre business people worked hard throughout the years to get High-way 2 widened and could never get our legislature to help with any of the funding that a major reconstruction would require. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) presently has on the table a proposal to reconstruct approximately 10 miles of Highway 2 to an expanded 2 lane with passing lanes beginning at the edge of Havre. The MDT is holding a meeting on their proposal on Thursday, January 28th at 5:30 pm in the Hill County Electric Hospitality Room to update the public on the status of this important project.

Bob Sivertson, President of the Highway 2 Association , has been inviting people to the meeting to support his efforts to get the MDT to “revisit” the findings of the EIS study which only warranted construction of a Super-2 instead of a 4-lane. Apparently Sivertson and his group which includes his travel buddies, Councilman Bob Kaul and Jimmy Tripleanus, are going to “throw a wrench in the gears” and are taking a “4-lanes or nothing stance" on this project.

Does that make sense to our readers? One would think that after being left 50 years in this highway wilderness a person wouldn’t want to jeopardize the 10-mile bone we have just been thrown. Be sure to attend this meeting if you have an opinion on Highway2

  1. I think that Caboy Kaul, Jimmy the Greek and Slim pickens Sivertson are over dosing on stupid pills and some one should take them away before they screw up the whole deal. People that can make it to this meeting should and let the MDT know that the Three stooges don't speake for the City of Havre only their loose knit little group mentally handicaped dumn asses that really should seek out serious therapy or retire.

  3. 10-mile bone we have just been thrown? I think we pay tax on our fuel in northern MT just like the rest of the state.

HWY 2 was once the main east to west through way across MT. Most of hwy 2 has been neglected by the MDT since the 40's. If Williamson would not have taken out the bridge between Havre and Chinook we would still be dealing with a way too narrow bridge that has killed a lot of people. All of hwy 2 may not need to be 4 lane but Harlem to Havre is a section that should be.

Please explain why the MDT threw a bone to Ulm with a real 4 lane highway years ago.
Our highway handles over sized loads is extremely busy at times AND slow moving traffic.

Hwy 2 going into Havre from the holiday village down to town was not made wide enough. We lost our shoulder when the MDT put in a turning lane to the Murph complex. I asked Mick Johnson why they did not build in a turning lane AND a shoulder like they did on the west side going out of town. I asked him if they would ever design something like this in Bozeman and he said 'No'

I am not saying waste at Ulm deserves waste here either.

After this 'upgrade' we will not see the MDT for another 6o yrs on this stretch of hwy.

  4. I agree with you beerogre. This is going to be it for some time to come.
Let's face it, there are over 600 miles of Hi-Way 2 thru Montana so doing a 10 mile section is just like throwing us a bone to shut us up

  5. I will also say just because the 3 stooges are not liked by the corector- it needs not disagree with them. The corrector can be on their side when it is right --- heck even O'reilly agrees with the Democrats every blue moon or so

  6. Get some real leadership with the three stooges and we can all agree

  7. Every single one of us at the Corrector is for the 4-lane beerogre and a couple of us have even joined the Association in times past, bought signs, etc but the fact of the matter is that these 3 guys are irritating the hell out of the brass at the MDT and we stand to have the super-2 funding moved elsewhere. Is that what is best for Hill County?

Better go to the meeting and see what Mic Johnson will tell you when those three idiots aren't within earshot and then post us back with how you think we should handle this situation.

  8. Do you really think this listening session is going to change the MDT's mind. Whether we throw the most annoying people out there or not the MDT has always had their mind made up about this project. The listening session is probably required before the project starts.

Kind of like what Obama said about the public being against Obama Care 'we did not spend enough time telling the American people what their values were'

I guess the MDT has not told us enough about why we don't need a 4 lane.

  9. The 4 for 2 people should hire the local school board to lobby MDT.

When it is said and done we could have about a dozen on and off ramps coming into Havre, AMBER and weather alert reader boards, and homeless Havre people that would run out and wash your windshield.

If fact, if ex Supt.Dave Mahon isn't doing anything, he should be contracted to head up the project.

I always knew this site could turn good ideas into great actions.

  10. As far as I am concerned our Community as missed out on a lot of opportunites and I hope this isn't one of them. I see the 4 lane highway as helping us. I also believe if one gives up fighting for something he believes in, then he is a fool. I applaud those that have carried the fight for those who won't and probably would benefit if it were to happen. Hopefully there will be a future for us and progress is necessary.
